Bitcoin Drops Below $81,000, Triggering Over $485 Million in Liquidations

On October 8, 2026, Bitcoin fell below the $81,000 mark, resulting in significant liquidations for leveraged traders. In just one hour, over $485 million in crypto positions were liquidated, primarily affecting long positions. This decline marked the first time Bitcoin had traded under $81,000 since mid-September, with intraday lows reported between $80,350 and $80,500.

The broader cryptocurrency market also experienced substantial losses, with total liquidations exceeding $1 billion within a 24-hour period. Ethereum was particularly hard hit, with liquidations estimated between $294 million and $333 million, at times surpassing Bitcoin's own liquidation figures. Other cryptocurrencies, including XRP, Solana, and Dogecoin, mirrored Bitcoin's downward trajectory, contributing to a widespread market decline.

Several factors contributed to this market pressure. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose to 5.31%, coinciding with Bitcoin's drop. Additionally, Brent crude oil prices surged to $105 amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, prompting significant outflows from U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Furthermore, transfers of Bitcoin from U.S. government-controlled addresses, linked to past hacks and exchange collapses, added to the selling pressure, with estimates valuing these transfers at hundreds of millions to over $1 billion.

While the $1 billion in daily liquidations is substantial, it does not set a record; that distinction belongs to an event in October 2025, which saw $19 billion in liquidations. The recent decline has erased some of Bitcoin's gains from a surge that began on September 21, highlighting the volatility and risks associated with leveraged trading in the cryptocurrency market.
