Bitcoin Faces Resistance Above $80,000 Amid Fluctuating Demand

Bitcoin reached approximately $81,000 in late August 2026, marking its highest price in three months, before retreating to the high $70,000s as buying momentum diminished. The recent rally, which saw Bitcoin rise from summer lows of around $58,000 to $64,000, represented a gain of approximately 23-38%. However, analysts indicate that this surge was primarily driven by a significant short squeeze rather than sustained organic buying.

During the rally, between $1.4 billion and $4 billion in short positions were liquidated, making it one of the largest short squeezes in Bitcoin's recent history. This forced liquidation of traders betting on lower prices contributed to the rapid price increase, but analysts from Glassnode and Bitfinex caution that the lack of conviction-driven accumulation may hinder Bitcoin's ability to maintain its upward trajectory.

In the U.S., spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced approximately $1.9 billion in net inflows over a week, the strongest performance since October 2025. However, these inflows have been inconsistent, with fluctuations between significant inflows and outflows. For Bitcoin to establish a stable price above $80,000, analysts suggest that ETF purchases need to demonstrate sustained momentum rather than sporadic interest.

Technical analysts have identified the $81,000-$83,000 range as immediate resistance, with potential targets of $85,000 to $90,000 if a breakout occurs. Conversely, the high $70,000s have served as a consolidation zone. Recent U.S. Treasury announcements regarding long-term bond buybacks have created a favorable environment for risk assets, but analysts warn that Bitcoin's recent gains may reflect a recovery from previous losses rather than the start of a new bull market. Profit-taking among investors who bought at lower prices has also contributed to the recent price fluctuations.
