Bullish and Equiniti Establish Coalition for Tokenized Securities Standards

Bullish, an institutional digital asset exchange, and Equiniti, a major transfer agent, have launched the Issuer Sponsored Token Coalition. This initiative aims to create standards and infrastructure for trading tokenized securities while ensuring that shareholder rights are fully preserved. The coalition's formation follows Bullish's announcement of a definitive agreement to acquire Equiniti for $4.2 billion, a deal that is expected to close in January 2027, pending regulatory approvals in the United States and the United Kingdom.

The coalition seeks to address the complexities of tokenizing securities, particularly the need to maintain voting rights, dividend entitlements, and regulatory protections associated with traditional shares. By focusing on the issuer rather than the exchange or custodian, the coalition aims to establish a framework where tokenized shares hold the same legal significance as their conventional counterparts. Equiniti's extensive experience, with nearly 3,000 issuer clients and over 20 million verified shareholders, lends credibility to this effort.

The merger between Bullish and Equiniti is notable not only for its financial implications but also for its potential impact on the broader capital markets. Currently, tokenized securities face challenges such as regulatory fragmentation and a lack of interoperability standards, which have hindered institutional adoption.
