CertiK Introduces AI Agents for Tracking Stolen Cryptocurrency

Blockchain security firm CertiK has announced the development of autonomous AI agents capable of tracing stolen cryptocurrency across various blockchain networks. These agents can draft reports on suspicious activities and pause vulnerable smart contracts, all while operating under human oversight. The findings were detailed in CertiK's Intel3D report, published on October 5, 2026, which emphasizes the need for rapid responses to crypto attacks that often outpace human analysts.

The AI agents continuously monitor on-chain transactions and can initiate defensive measures when threats are detected. For instance, they can pause a vulnerable contract within the same transaction block, which is crucial in preventing exploits like flash loans. These attacks can manipulate protocols and drain funds almost instantaneously, leaving little time for human intervention. The report also highlights the challenges of tracing laundered funds, which often pass through mixers and bridges to obscure their origins.

CertiK pointed to the Bybit exploit as a case study, noting that a significant portion of the stolen Ethereum was converted to Bitcoin shortly after the attack. This underscores the urgency of continuous monitoring and rapid response capabilities. However, the report also cautions that when AI agents make errors, such as freezing legitimate transactions or filing incorrect reports, the responsibility falls on human operators assigned to oversee these agents.

To mitigate risks associated with AI decision-making, CertiK recommends implementing strict authority levels, detailed audit trails, and rigorous testing protocols. The report emphasizes that while agentic AI can enhance security operations in both Web2 and Web3 environments, organizations must remain vigilant about the potential for errors and adversarial attacks that could exploit AI systems.
