Coinbase Completes US Derivatives Infrastructure with CFTC Clearing Registration

The CFTC’s approval of Coinbase Clearing LLC turns the US-based cryptocurrency exchange into an end-to-end derivatives platform. The entity, registered with the CFTC on September 28, is permitted to clear fully collateralised futures, options on futures, and swaps.

      How the Clearing Will Work

Coinbase plans to use USDC as collateral for contracts cleared through the new entity. The company describes the infrastructure as USDC-native, although the use of USDC is not a condition of its CFTC registration.

As the stablecoin can move outside traditional banking hours, the clearinghouse is designed to support around-the-clock settlement.

Coinbase Clearing may initially process only fully collateralised contracts, meaning that participants must deposit enough collateral before a trade is cleared to cover their potential payment obligations.

According to the regulatory filing, the fully funded structure also removes the need for Coinbase Clearing to collect variation margin or maintain a default fund.

The registration defines the types of derivatives Coinbase Clearing may handle, but it does not approve every individual contract. Coinbase has not disclosed which products it will clear internally first or a timetable for live operations.

Coinbase Now Controls Three Parts of the Process

Coinbase already operates two other CFTC-regulated derivatives entities. Coinbase Derivatives LLC is a designated contract market, providing the venue where contracts are listed and traded. Coinbase Financial Markets is an FCM, acting as the intermediary through which customers access derivatives.

Coinbase Clearing adds the post-trade layer. It will stand between counterparties, process settlement and manage collateral for products within its approved scope. The structure gives Coinbase control over listing, customer access and clearing for fully collateralised derivatives.

However, the group will continue using external partners for parts of its business that fall outside the new clearinghouse’s remit, including margined derivatives and planned single-stock perpetual futures. Those products require a different risk and margin framework and will not move to Coinbase Clearing immediately.

The approval therefore expands Coinbase’s “Everything Exchange” model beyond the customer-facing product range. The company now also operates regulated entities covering the main stages of a US derivatives transaction, though its new clearing authority remains limited to fully funded contracts.
