Cointelegraph Seeks Buyer Following Significant Traffic Decline

Cointelegraph, a prominent crypto news outlet founded in 2013, is reportedly seeking a buyer after experiencing a dramatic decline in web traffic. The outlet's US traffic plummeted by approximately 82% in the latter half of 2025, coinciding with a Google spam update that targeted low-quality content. This decline saw monthly visits drop from around 6 million in September to just 1.43 million by December 2025.

The traffic decrease accelerated in October 2025, shortly after the conclusion of Google's worldwide Spam Update, which aimed to demote content deemed manipulative. Reports suggest that the outlet's reliance on questionable SEO practices and gambling-related affiliate marketing may have contributed to this penalty, although Google has not confirmed these links. The broader US crypto media sector experienced a decline of only 27% to 34% during the same period, highlighting the severity of Cointelegraph's situation.

Jon Rice, who returned as editor-in-chief in August 2025, resigned at the end of December 2025, citing the crisis as an “existential threat to business.” By mid-2026, there were signs of limited recovery, with some regional editions appearing in search results, but overall traffic remained significantly low, particularly from organic search sources. For potential buyers, the acquisition presents a complex challenge, as they would inherit a well-known brand alongside a domain with minimal organic traffic and uncertainty regarding future recovery.
