Vitalik Buterin Warns AI Advances Could Threaten Lattice Cryptography Within Two Years

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has raised concerns that advancements in artificial intelligence could compromise lattice-based cryptography within the next two years. Speaking on October 7, 2026, Buterin highlighted the potential risks to digital signature schemes such as ML-DSA and Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE), both designed to withstand quantum computing threats. He also pointed out vulnerabilities in the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), which is widely used in cryptocurrency wallets.

Buterin advised against panic-driven actions but recommended that users consider transitioning to hash-based signatures when possible. He suggested utilizing new addresses that have never executed transactions to minimize exposure of public keys, thereby reducing the risk of attacks. His comments were echoed by Ethereum researcher Justin Drake, who emphasized the urgency of preparing for vulnerabilities in ECDSA signatures due to recent developments in AI-driven mathematics.

The implications of these warnings extend beyond the cryptocurrency sector, affecting secure websites, messaging applications, and virtual private networks (VPNs). While there was no immediate market reaction to Buterin's statements, the advice for users and developers is clear: those relying on lattice-based cryptography should reassess their strategies in light of these emerging threats. Buterin framed his concerns as probabilities, indicating that any significant breakthrough in AI against these cryptographic methods could escalate the situation into a critical emergency.
