DeepSeek CEO Highlights Strategic Shift to Huawei Chips for AI Model Training

DeepSeek, a company focused on artificial intelligence, is making significant strategic moves to train large models using domestic chips, particularly those from Huawei. CEO Liang Wenfeng emphasized this shift during a recent closed-door investor meeting, stating that success in this area is crucial for the company's future. DeepSeek anticipates receiving a new batch of Huawei chips for training purposes in the fourth quarter of 2026, although details regarding the specific models and quantities remain undisclosed.

Liang Wenfeng expressed confidence that Huawei's chips could rival those of Nvidia within a few years. Currently, DeepSeek relies on Nvidia chips for its model training, with estimates indicating that training top-tier large models would necessitate approximately 50,000 Nvidia GB300 chips. In contrast, transitioning to Huawei's Ascend 950 chips would require around 200,000 units, highlighting a significant increase in hardware needs. The primary challenge noted by Liang is the insufficient supply of chips from Huawei, which has been a limiting factor in the company's plans.
