Drift Foundation Launches Compensation Tokens Amid Community Dissatisfaction

The Drift Foundation, now known as Velocity, has initiated a claims process for users affected by a security incident that occurred on April 1. Affected users can claim newly issued compensation tokens, known as DFX, at a rate of one DFX for every dollar of verified loss. The total supply of DFX is approximately 299.5 million tokens, which corresponds to about $295.4 million in verified losses, with no further issuance planned.

Users can redeem DFX tokens for USDT through an official portal, with the redemption price currently set at approximately $0.0104. This means that for every $100 lost, users can expect to recover about $1, covering only about 1% of their losses. This limited compensation has led to dissatisfaction within the community, as many believe the recovery plan falls significantly short of expectations.

The compensation plan includes a maximum support commitment of $127.5 million from Tether and up to $20 million from partners, alongside potential future funding from transaction fee sharing on the new trading platform Velocity and the recovery of stolen funds. However, these commitments are primarily upper limits or installment arrangements and were not included in the initial recovery pool.

Following the launch of DFX, the token's trading price on secondary markets has seen a notable increase, rising from about $0.01 to approximately $0.03, reflecting a 24-hour increase of around 210%. The liquidity at that time was approximately $200,000. Buyers are primarily focused on the potential for future funding and revenue from the protocol, as well as the implications of early redemptions and the destruction of unclaimed tokens after the redemption window closes on January 1, 2028.
