Core Lightning Issues Urgent Security Warning for Bitcoin Node Operators
The Core Lightning team, responsible for the open-source Bitcoin Lightning Network node software, has issued an urgent alert regarding security vulnerabilities affecting older versions of its software. Reports indicate that attackers are specifically targeting nodes that have not been updated, prompting the team to advise operators using version 26.06.7 or earlier to upgrade immediately to the latest release.
The alert follows an investigation initiated on September 16 into potential issues that could impact experimental features and user funds. On September 22, Core Lightning released version 26.06.8, which addressed several defects and included critical security patches. The team acknowledged the contributions of the Bitcoin Red Team and other individuals and organizations for their responsible reporting of vulnerabilities.
The recent update resolves a bug that could crash sender nodes, mitigates memory exhaustion issues with the REST interface, and addresses a vulnerability that could lead to the confiscation of user funds during payment channel closures. To enhance security, the update intentionally obscured certain testing content to prevent exploitation by attackers. Earlier in August, the project had already begun a collaborative process to address vulnerabilities identified through AI-generated reports, leading to the release of version 26.06.7 shortly thereafter.
