Germany's BaFin Denies MiCAR License to Bitcoin Group SE's Futurum Bank

Germany's financial regulator, BaFin, has denied a MiCAR authorization to futurum bank AG, a subsidiary of Bitcoin Group SE that operates the bitcoin.de trading platform. This decision, announced on October 6, 2026, comes after the application had been under review for over 15 months, submitted on June 27, 2025. The rejection is particularly impactful as trading on bitcoin.de has been largely suspended since June 12, 2026, turning a temporary halt into a more serious operational challenge for the company.

Despite holding a banking license, futurum bank AG required a separate MiCAR authorization to provide crypto services, which BaFin declined to grant. CEO Moritz Eckert described the decision as a setback but indicated that the company had anticipated this outcome and is exploring alternative solutions. Following the announcement, Bitcoin Group SE's stock experienced a decline of approximately 3-5%.

In response to the regulatory setback, Bitcoin Group SE plans to collaborate with regulated partners in Germany to launch a new trading model through an updated bitcoin.de app. This model aims to separate trading and custody functions between different partners, with a rollout expected within weeks. The company reassured stakeholders that customer assets will remain secure during this transition. As of the first half of 2026, Bitcoin Group SE reported revenues of €1.59 million, with an EBITDA of negative €3.25 million, raising concerns about the company's financial stability moving forward.
