Gifted Virtual Assets to Minors in South Korea Surge 2.7 Times in One Year

In South Korea, the gifting of virtual assets to minors has seen a significant increase, with 103 cases reported in 2025, totaling approximately 4.034 billion Korean won. This figure marks a 2.7-fold rise from the 1.47 billion Korean won recorded in 2024. Overall, the National Tax Service reported a total of 423 cases of inheritance and gifting of virtual assets in the country, amounting to 45.862 billion Korean won, which represents increases of 2.4 times and 3.4 times year-on-year, respectively.

The surge in virtual asset gifting comes amid growing interest and investment in digital currencies among younger demographics. As the market evolves, South Korean authorities are preparing to implement stricter tax regulations on virtual assets starting in 2027. This regulatory framework will include virtual asset service providers (VASPs) such as Upbit and Bithumb, expanding the scope of financial asset inquiries related to inheritance and gifting.

These developments reflect a broader trend in South Korea, where the government is increasingly focusing on the taxation and regulation of virtual assets to ensure compliance and transparency in the rapidly changing digital economy.
