Kakao Pay and KakaoBank Partner with Fireblocks to Explore Stablecoin Opportunities

Korean fintech company Kakao Pay and internet bank KakaoBank have entered into a memorandum of understanding with cryptocurrency infrastructure provider Fireblocks to explore opportunities in the digital asset sector, particularly focusing on stablecoins. This collaboration aims to conduct proof-of-concept testing for digital asset infrastructure that aligns with South Korean regulatory, security, and service standards, thereby establishing a secure on-chain framework for the country's burgeoning digital asset market.

Kakao Pay specializes in mobile payments and financial services, while KakaoBank is recognized as one of the largest internet banks in South Korea. Fireblocks, which supports over 2,500 institutions including more than 100 banks, will play a crucial role in this initiative. The announcement did not specify any timelines for the project's launch or implementation.

This partnership follows a previous agreement between Kakao Group and stablecoin issuer Circle, signed in July 2026, aimed at exploring blockchain-based payment infrastructure and the development of a Korean won stablecoin. As South Korea enhances its digital asset regulatory framework, Kakao Pay and KakaoBank join other financial and tech firms in investigating stablecoin opportunities, including recent initiatives by KB Financial Group and fintech company Toss.
