Mastercard Launches Early Access to AI Agent Payment Program at Cloudflare Connect

On October 20, 2026, Mastercard introduced early developer access to its Agent Pay for Machines program during the Cloudflare Connect conference. This initiative allows software agents to autonomously make payments within predefined spending limits set by humans, aiming to streamline transactions for businesses.

The demonstration showcased an AI agent managing an advertising campaign for a protein bar, successfully executing nine payments to two merchants, AIsa and Cloudflare AI Gateway, all from a single pre-approved budget. Developers participating in the early access program will receive a suite of APIs, a comprehensive toolkit, and a testing sandbox to facilitate integration.

Agent Pay for Machines supports various payment methods, including cards, bank accounts, and stablecoins, each equipped with built-in spending controls. This program is currently in a pilot phase, with Mastercard planning to gather developer feedback to enhance the system before a broader commercial launch. The involvement of companies like Coinbase and Base in the pilot suggests a significant shift towards integrating cryptocurrency infrastructure into traditional payment systems.
