Ether.fi Mandates Optimum’s mump2p for All Node Operators
Ether.fi, a liquid staking protocol, has made the use of Optimum's mump2p software mandatory for all 12 of its node operators. This change coincides with the mainnet launch of the protocol on October 20, 2026, marking a significant shift from the previous optional status of the software. With this requirement, a total of 16 Ethereum node operators are now utilizing mump2p, collectively managing over 1.4 million staked ETH and approximately 22,000 validator keys.
Mump2p is designed to enhance block propagation speed on the Ethereum mainnet, reportedly delivering blocks 2.5 to 3.5 times faster than the existing GossipSub protocol. The software employs Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) to transmit mixed combinations of data, allowing for more efficient block delivery. Optimum claims that this improvement leads to better head-vote accuracy among validators, increasing the likelihood of earning rewards by voting for the most recent block.
The integration of mump2p requires no hardware changes and can typically be completed in under two hours for each operator. The rollout followed an extensive testing phase that began in mid-2025. Notably, the deployment of this technology raises questions about network concentration, as more operators rely on a single third-party gateway for block propagation. While Optimum asserts that its technology has increased total value by over $3.7 billion, independent verification of these claims remains necessary to assess the actual performance improvements across varying network conditions.
