Celestia Launches Fibre for Enhanced Rollup Data Handling
Celestia has activated Fibre, a new high-throughput data availability lane for rollups, on its mainnet as of October 20, 2026. This activation followed the approval from validators who achieved the necessary 83.33% voting power threshold. Fibre allows rollups to send large data blobs directly to validators, streamlining the process of data availability, which is crucial for verifying the integrity of transaction data.
Fibre operates alongside Celestia's existing Layer 1 (L1) data square, enabling rollups to submit larger payloads. The maximum size for a single Fibre blob is set at 128 MiB, significantly larger than the 8 MiB limit for the standard L1 route. The initial throughput benchmark for Fibre reached 3.07 terabits per second across 120 validators, although the mainnet version currently operates with smaller uploads and a slower block cadence.
The introduction of Fibre is expected to benefit sectors that generate large volumes of data, such as artificial intelligence and microtransactions. Users of the Fibre lane must lock up Celestia's native token, TIA, which is required for staking, escrow deposits, and fee payments. This connection between Fibre usage and TIA demand is designed to ensure that the network can handle the increased data loads effectively.
