a16z Warned about “Wallet Wars”: How AI Agents to Reshape Online Payments

      • a16z said Stripe, PayPal, and Shopify are competing for payments via AI agents.
      • Using virtual cards could deprive users of rewards, card benefits, and purchase protection.
      • Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are developing standards that will let AI agents pay without direct access to a user’s card.

Venture firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) described how payment services are competing to integrate with AI agents that can already book hotels and buy goods on users’ behalf. According to the piece, the main battle is not only over the ability to process payments, but also over preserving rewards, purchase protection, and the relationship between customers and merchants.

According to a16z, the rise of agentic commerce is creating a new market for payment platforms, but it also raises questions about who will be responsible for AI mistakes and who will control payment routing.

Stripe, PayPal, and Shopify Compete for AI Agents

For an agent to complete a purchase on its own, it needs access to a user’s payment tools. That is why major companies are trying to integrate their services with new AI assistants.

Among the main players in the competition, a16z names:

      • Stripe Link — 300 million users
      • Shopify Shop Pay — 250 million users
      • PayPal — more than 400 million users

Stripe and Shopify are already actively integrating payment solutions with AI agents, including Meta’s Muse and Instinct. PayPal, for its part, has an extensive network of consumers and merchants.

However, access to payment data does not guarantee that an agent will be able to make a purchase on the terms the user expects. For example, if an AI books a flight ticket using a credit card with an airline rewards program, but pays the merchant with a virtual card from a payment service, the user may not receive bonus miles. Likewise, certain card benefits and purchase protection may not carry over.

This is because two separate transactions effectively take place: between the user and the payment intermediary, and between the intermediary and the merchant. As a result, the payment goes through, but the link between the customer and the store may be broken.

From Payment Tokens to Open Standards

Another issue is choosing a payment method. If an agent has access to multiple wallets and cards, it must account for rewards, user preferences, merchant terms, and transaction protection. That’s why, in a16z’s view, agents will need not only payment data, but also clear rules for selecting a payment method.

A separate question is liability for mistakes. If a user instructs an agent to book a hotel for $500, but it picks the wrong dates, it is unclear who should compensate the losses. The author emphasizes that payment authorization, correct execution of the task, and buyer protection are different jobs that require separate mechanisms.

As a potential direction for development, a16z points to open standards for agentic commerce that payment networks Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are working on. Relevant initiatives include Visa Intelligent Commerce, Mastercard Agent Pay, and Amex ACE.

Recall that Mastercard launched a service for payments between AI agents in June 2026.

Such standards should allow agents to use a user’s payment credentials without direct access to their card. To do this, the wallet would generate a limited token with rules, such as a spending cap or permission to pay only a specific merchant. At the same time, the transaction would be linked to the original card, helping preserve rewards and cardholder rights.

“The best of all worlds is a future where my agent can use my credit card, without having my credit card,” the author concluded.

Earlier, we wrote that Coinbase unveiled crypto wallets for AI agents, and MoonPay unveiled MoonPay Agents, giving AI agents access to wallets and the ability to execute transactions via a command-line interface.
