Nvidia CEO Advocates for AI as National Infrastructure at G20 Ministerial

At the G20 Innovation Ministerial held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on September 2, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang proposed that artificial intelligence should be treated as a national infrastructure akin to power grids and highways. Huang emphasized that building one gigawatt of AI infrastructure would require an investment of approximately $50 billion to $60 billion, urging G20 nations to prioritize AI development without getting bogged down in regulatory debates.

Huang described AI as 'the great equalizer,' suggesting that it democratizes access to advanced capabilities for nations with limited research resources. He argued that deploying cutting-edge AI models could significantly enhance problem-solving abilities that traditionally relied on extensive institutional knowledge.

The ministerial featured other prominent figures in the AI sector, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown, who joined Huang in advocating for a shift towards practical regulation. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick supported this perspective, calling for a regulatory approach that focuses on addressing real-world issues rather than hypothetical scenarios.

The discussions at the G20 Innovation Ministerial are expected to influence the upcoming G20 leaders' summit in December 2026, potentially shaping future national AI strategies and investment plans. Huang's framework, which has been dubbed 'Jensen Math' in industry circles, aims to translate the complexities of AI infrastructure into terms that resonate with financial decision-makers.
