Polygon Plans Permissionless Burn of 100 Million POL Tokens

Polygon is set to implement a permissionless contract that will allow users to permanently burn 100 million POL tokens, which represents approximately 83% of the base-fee collector currently holding 121 million tokens. Sandeep Nailwal, CEO of Polygon Foundation, announced that the contracts are currently on testnet and will transition to the mainnet following the final approvals from the Security Council. The initial burn will eliminate 100 million POL in one transaction, with subsequent quarterly burns available for community members to initiate.

The planned burn is significant as it will reduce the total supply of POL, which is currently listed at about 10.716 billion tokens, by roughly 0.93%. However, this action will not establish a hard cap on the token's supply. Polygon's documentation indicates that POL will continue to have ongoing emissions, with an effective annual rate of 2% starting in June 2025. The one-time burn is therefore less than half of this annual rate, and the overall supply dynamics will depend on future fee burns compared to new token issuance.

Nailwal noted that POL has been deflationary since January 2026 and highlighted Polygon's revenue generation of $24.5 million in 2026, significantly outpacing competitors such as Arbitrum and Near. The next step for Polygon is to finalize the mainnet deployment after receiving the necessary Security Council approvals, with the initial burn yet to take place.
