Research Reveals Token Issuer Blacklists Ineffective in Recovering Stolen Crypto Funds

A recent study by Blockaid has highlighted the ineffectiveness of token issuer blacklists in recovering stolen cryptocurrency. Between January and August 2026, $1.18 billion was lost due to 60 major on-chain exploits, yet only $9.8 million, or 0.8% of the total stolen amount, was successfully returned to victims. The research indicates that all recoveries were facilitated through governance votes or validator actions, with issuer blacklists contributing nothing to the recovery efforts.

Blockaid's findings reveal that a total of $91.2 million was either recovered or frozen, with a staggering 99.1% of this amount coming from governance or validator interventions. The study also noted that recovery events were rare, with only five of the 60 incidents resulting in any form of recovery or freezing activity. The median time between an exploit and the movement of stolen assets was just 17 minutes, underscoring the urgency with which attackers operate.

The report emphasizes the challenges faced by protocols and users in the wake of such exploits. With hackers still holding $287.1 million in traceable stolen assets, including a significant portion linked to the April exploit of Drift Protocol, the data suggests that prevention is the most effective strategy for safeguarding funds. As the landscape of cryptocurrency security evolves, the reliance on issuer blacklisting appears increasingly inadequate.
