Coinbase Report Highlights Surge in Stablecoin Transactions

A recent report by Coinbase, titled "The Always-On Dollar," reveals that stablecoin transactions have surged significantly in the third quarter of 2026, with an average hourly transfer amount exceeding $400 million. This growth reflects a broader trend in the digital currency market, where stablecoins are increasingly utilized for transactions outside traditional banking hours. Notably, approximately 73% of stablecoin transfer volume over the past year occurred during these off-hours, indicating a strong demand for 24/7 payment solutions.

The report also highlights a remarkable increase in stablecoin transfer volume, which has quadrupled since the beginning of 2023, reaching $891 billion in the third quarter. If this growth trajectory continues, projections suggest that the total volume could hit $1.5 trillion by the end of 2027. Additionally, the report points out that using the USDC stablecoin for remittances can lead to substantial savings, with fees reduced by about 86% compared to conventional payment methods.

Furthermore, the report suggests that if a significant portion of global international transactions—estimated at 80%—were to transition to stablecoin networks, the global annual GDP could see an increase of $155 billion. Looking to the future, stablecoins are expected to play a crucial role in the emerging AI agent economy, with McKinsey estimating that between $3 trillion to $5 trillion in business-to-consumer transactions will be facilitated by AI agents by 2030, supported by stablecoins for various small transactions.
