Starknet Explores Transition to Layer 1 for Enhanced Security Against Quantum Threats

Eli Ben-Sasson, co-founder and CEO of StarkWare, announced that Starknet, currently operating as a Layer 2 solution on the Ethereum blockchain, is evaluating a potential transition to Layer 1. This move aims to enable Starknet to independently manage its network security and address emerging cryptographic risks associated with quantum computing and artificial intelligence.

Starknet utilizes ZK-STARK technology, which provides it with cryptographic agility. The platform has developed a roadmap for migrating to post-quantum security. Ethereum is working towards achieving full resistance to quantum attacks at Layer 1 by the end of 2029, while Bitcoin has not made similar commitments. Starknet anticipates implementing its security upgrades as early as 2027.
