Sui Processes First Quantum-Safe Transaction on Development Network

Mysten Labs has announced that Sui has successfully completed its first native quantum-safe transaction on its development network, marking a significant milestone in its technological advancements. This achievement was made possible with the release of devnet-v1.82.0, which introduced protocol version 139 on October 12, 2026. The update includes the addition of ML-DSA-65 as a new account signature type, with plans for mainnet support expected in the first quarter of 2027, contingent upon successful audits and feedback from the testnet.

The new signature scheme, ML-DSA-65, is standardized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under FIPS 204 and is rated at Level 3 security. It is designed for everyday use in native accounts, allowing users to send tokens and interact with applications securely. Additionally, for high-value Move smart contract vaults, Sui is implementing a different signature scheme, SLH-DSA-SHA2-128s, which is also NIST-approved and utilizes distinct mathematical families to enhance security.

The transition to quantum-safe accounts is designed to be user-friendly, allowing existing users to retain their current 32-byte seeds and recovery phrases without needing to create new ones. The upgrade will not alter user addresses, as it leverages Sui's existing address aliases, enabling users to rotate their keys seamlessly. Importantly, the implementation of quantum-safe signatures will not incur additional gas costs for users.

This development is part of Sui's broader quantum readiness strategy, which was outlined in August 2026. While the immediate focus is on the vault upgrade for managing large Move smart contract treasuries, the eventual rollout of ML-DSA-65 account support is anticipated to enhance security for everyday users. The success of these initiatives will depend on the outcomes of audits and testnet evaluations, as well as user adoption of the opt-in security features.
