Vitalik Buterin Advocates for Upgrades in Public-Key Cryptography

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has expressed concerns regarding the current state of public-key cryptography, suggesting that it may require one or two additional upgrades to ensure long-term stability. In a post shared on October 7, 2026, Buterin highlighted the potential risks posed by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) mathematics, which he believes could undermine existing lattice-based cryptography schemes, such as ML-DSA and Falcon, within the next two years.

Buterin proposed a significant increase in lattice key sizes, recommending a tenfold expansion as a precautionary measure to enhance the security of public-key encryption. This upgrade is particularly relevant for applications beyond blockchain technology, including secure messaging and virtual private networks (VPNs). He emphasized that while hash-based cryptography is preferable for security, public-key encryption requires more complex mathematical structures that hashes alone cannot provide.

The upcoming Hegotá upgrade, scheduled for 2027, is expected to be a pivotal moment for Ethereum, marking a transition towards more advanced designs aimed at being quantum-safe and resilient against AI threats. However, not all experts agree with Buterin's assessment. Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, has voiced skepticism regarding the necessity of increasing parameters without concrete evidence of vulnerabilities in lattice schemes. As the landscape of cryptography evolves, the implications of these discussions will be closely monitored, particularly in relation to secure messaging and VPN systems.
