ARK Invest's Lorenzo Valente Expresses Optimism on Bitcoin's Quantum Security Measures

Lorenzo Valente, the Director of Research for Digital Assets at ARK Invest, has expressed increased optimism regarding Bitcoin's ability to implement quantum-resistant measures before the anticipated 'Q Day.' This hypothetical event refers to the moment when quantum computers could potentially break the cryptographic security that protects Bitcoin addresses. Valente's comments, made in mid-October 2026, reflect a shift from his previous concerns expressed in mid-2025, aligning with a white paper co-authored by ARK and Unchained, which outlines a gradual approach to quantum risk.

The white paper, published on March 12, 2026, identifies five stages of quantum risk to Bitcoin, emphasizing that the threat will develop over time rather than manifesting suddenly. This gradual timeline allows developers the necessary space to implement protocol upgrades, including post-quantum signature schemes designed to withstand quantum attacks. As of October 11, 2026, approximately 7.1 million Bitcoin, or about 35% of the circulating supply, are held in addresses with exposed public keys, making them vulnerable to potential quantum threats.

Current quantum computers are still in the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era, characterized by limited capabilities and high error rates. Experts predict that it may take years or even decades for quantum technology to reach a level where it poses a significant threat to Bitcoin's elliptic-curve cryptography. Meanwhile, discussions within the Bitcoin community are ongoing regarding proposals like BIP-360, which aims to enhance Bitcoin's defenses against quantum risks, indicating a proactive approach to addressing these challenges.
