China Lags Behind in Independent AI Data Companies Compared to the U.S.

China has accumulated a vast amount of data but has not yet developed large independent AI data companies akin to those in the United States, such as Surge AI and Scale AI. This observation was made by Grace Shao, author of AI Proem, who noted that while the U.S. has established advanced models and data markets, Chinese technology firms tend to keep data within closed ecosystems. Additionally, data from enterprises and traditional industries in China remains fragmented, with state-owned enterprises often reluctant to share data with external suppliers.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China is projected to generate 52.26 zettabytes of data by 2025, yet only 22.13% of this data is categorized as structured. Lin Zhenya, CTO of Benyuan Zhishu, highlighted that there are approximately 2,000 to 3,000 labeling companies in China, with the top three companies controlling only 20% to 30% of the market, in stark contrast to the U.S. where the leading firms dominate with 70% to 80% market share.

Recent developments in the Chinese AI sector include the completion of financing by Beijing-based UniPat, which achieved a pre-investment valuation of $1 billion. Another competitor, Humanlaya, has a post-financing valuation nearing $1 billion as well. Both companies have received investments from HSG and are reportedly servicing major clients like Alibaba and ByteDance. Additionally, Qian Baidu announced plans to acquire approximately 90.91% equity in Benyuan Zhishu for 300 million yuan, while Haitan Ruisheng reported a 59% increase in annual revenue, reaching 377 million yuan in 2025.
