Suspected North Korean Hackers Move Stolen Funds from Bitget to Zcash

On September 30, 2026, on-chain investigator ZachXBT reported that suspected North Korean attackers are transferring stolen funds from the cryptocurrency exchange Bitget to Zcash, a privacy-focused digital currency. Approximately 2,700 ZEC, valued at around 3.8 million dollars, have been moved to Zcash's obscured pool, where transaction details can be concealed from public view.

This transfer is part of a larger security incident involving multiple asset types, which resulted in the theft of approximately 388 million dollars. In total, around 18,900 ZEC, equivalent to about 28.3 million dollars, were stolen from Bitget. The incident has raised concerns about the security of cryptocurrency exchanges and the methods used by cybercriminals to launder stolen funds.

Gracy Chen, CEO of Bitget, has expressed skepticism regarding the recovery of the stolen assets, stating that she is "not very optimistic" about the chances of reclaiming the lost funds. The ongoing situation highlights the challenges faced by exchanges in safeguarding user assets and the increasing sophistication of cyberattacks in the cryptocurrency sector.
