Taiwan Blocks Coinbase and Kalshi Websites Over Election Betting Concerns

Taiwan has blocked access to the websites of Coinbase Global Inc. and Kalshi Inc. due to concerns over illegal betting related to the upcoming local elections. A New Taipei District Court issued the order on October 15, 2026, just over six weeks before voters are set to cast their ballots on November 28. The court's decision underscores Taiwan's strict stance against wagering on electoral outcomes, as outlined in the Public Officials Election and Recall Act, which prohibits profit-driven gambling linked to elections.

Reports indicate that users began experiencing difficulties accessing the sites on October 14, a day before the court's ruling was confirmed. Those attempting to visit the websites were redirected to a notice referencing the court's orders. The Criminal Investigation Bureau of Taiwan characterized the online betting activities as a potential threat to the electoral process and a means to prevent foreign interference in the elections.

Coinbase and Kalshi's connection stems from their collaboration on prediction markets that include contracts tied to Taiwanese local races. This incident follows a similar action taken against Polymarket, which was also blocked under the same election law. The legal landscape has become more stringent following a 2023 amendment that increased penalties for violations, with bettors facing up to six months in prison and operators up to five years.

The timing of the elections is significant, as they are seen as a gauge of the ruling party's popularity under President Lai Ching-te. This situation highlights the challenges faced by companies like Coinbase in expanding their prediction market offerings, particularly in jurisdictions where such activities are classified as gambling rather than financial products. Taiwan's consistent application of its election laws suggests a firm commitment to maintaining the integrity of its electoral process.
