Trump Administration to Transfer AI Officials to White House for Enhanced Policy Involvement

The Trump administration is set to transfer three senior officials from the U.S. artificial intelligence model testing agency, the Center for Artificial Intelligence Safety and Standards Integration (CAISSI), to the White House. These officials will report directly to Michael Kratsios, the White House technology policy director, and Sean Cairncross, the national cyber director. While there were discussions about relocating the entire agency to the White House, the decision was made to only adjust part of the senior leadership, with the specific identities of the officials involved remaining undisclosed.

CAISSI, which operates under the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) within the U.S. Department of Commerce, has faced significant changes since its establishment by the Biden administration. The agency has undergone three name changes in less than two years, and its head, Chris Fall, resigned just three months after taking office in July 2026, leaving the position vacant. CAISSI employs around 40 staff members and has an annual budget of approximately $15 million, focusing on safety assessments of AI models.

The agency is currently collaborating with the National Security Agency to evaluate AI models from companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic prior to their public release. Notable models under assessment include OpenAI's Astra and Anthropic's Mythos, as well as previously evaluated models like DeepSeek V4 Pro and Zhiyuan GLM-5.3. Google has confirmed that its Gemini 4 Argon model has also participated in the voluntary testing process. The White House aims to enhance the involvement of model testing experts in policy decision-making through these leadership adjustments.
