U.S. Treasury Secretary Urges Senate to Advance Cryptocurrency Clarity Act

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called on the Senate to expedite the legislative process for the Clarity Act, a bill aimed at establishing a regulatory framework for digital assets. In a post on the X platform, Bessent emphasized the importance of the bill in preventing 'bad actors' from exploiting digital asset technologies and urged all parties to engage in negotiations to move the legislation forward after the August recess.

The Clarity Act, which passed in the House last year, seeks to clearly classify digital assets as securities, commodities, or stablecoins. However, the bill has faced delays this year due to disagreements between banking lobbyists and cryptocurrency companies, particularly regarding stablecoin revenue issues. A revised draft introduced in July includes provisions that prohibit government officials from promoting or profiting from cryptocurrencies, but some Democratic lawmakers argue that further amendments are necessary.

Bessent warned that failing to pass the Clarity Act would send a negative message to both allies and adversaries, suggesting that the United States is not prepared to lead in the digital asset space and is willing to compromise national security measures to address digital asset misuse. Former President Donald Trump has also urged lawmakers to prioritize the passage of the bill.
