Acwa to consider solar and wind projects in Mongolia

Saudi renewable energy company Acwa has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Mongolia’s Sun Steppe Power (SSP) to explore the cross-border export of electricity to China.

The companies will assess building cross-border solar and wind power projects with a targeted capacity of 4.5 gigawatts, supported by a 500-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, the state-run Saudi Press Agency reported.

SSP is a subsidiary of London-listed Petro Matad, a hydrocarbon exploration and production company.

Acwa entered China’s renewables market in March 2025, signing agreements to develop more than 1GW of projects across several provinces.

The Public Investment Fund-controlled company aims to invest up to $30 billion in China by 2030.

Acwa executives also held discussions this week with Iraqi electricity minister Ali Saadi Waheeb about potentially doubling the capacity of a solar plant in Central Najaf governorate.

The company has 32 projects under development, with a combined power-generation capacity of 47GW and water desalination capacity of 2 million cubic metres per day.

Acwa’s shares, listed on the Saudi Exchange, closed at SAR160.10 on Wednesday and are down nearly 12 percent so far this year.
