Bank of Japan Governor Signals Potential Rate Hike as Inflation Approaches Target

Kazuo Ueda, the Governor of the Bank of Japan (BOJ), addressed the media in Tokyo, indicating that underlying inflation is nearing the central bank's target of 2%. Ueda emphasized that the BOJ sees potential for further interest rate increases, suggesting that the current economic conditions support such a move. He noted that despite the recent rate hike in September, financial conditions remain accommodative, which continues to aid economic recovery.

Ueda's remarks align with expectations that the BOJ may revise its October economic outlook to reflect that underlying inflation has effectively reached the 2% target. While this acknowledgment would be more symbolic than an immediate trigger for a rate hike, it strengthens the case for potential tightening of monetary policy in December. Market analysts currently estimate a 64% probability of another rate increase by that time.

The BOJ is cautious about making consecutive rate adjustments, as policymakers are wary of moving too aggressively. However, Ueda's comments suggest that the central bank is likely to continue raising rates in response to economic and price developments. The timing and pace of future policy changes will depend on how closely actual conditions align with the BOJ's baseline forecasts.
