European Stock Markets Open Higher Amid Optimism, France Lags

European stock markets opened higher on October 6, 2026, buoyed by positive momentum from Wall Street and Asian markets. The Eurostoxx index rose by 0.5%, while Germany's DAX and the UK's FTSE increased by 0.5% and 0.6%, respectively. Spain's IBEX and Italy's FTSE MIB both saw gains of 0.7%.

Despite the overall positive trend, France's CAC 40 index lagged behind with a modest increase of 0.2%. This underperformance is attributed to ongoing concerns regarding the country's fiscal stability. French government bonds have faced significant pressure, leading to a widening yield spread between French and German 10-year bonds, which reached 150 basis points last Friday, the highest level since 2012.

The uncertainty surrounding France's budget plans and debt outlook continues to pose risks for European assets. Meanwhile, US futures also indicated a slight upward trend, with S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures both up approximately 0.2%, following a record high close for the Nasdaq. However, long-term Treasury yields in the US remain near multi-decade highs, adding to the broader pressure on rates.
