$23 Million in Recovered Bitfinex Hack Bitcoin Transferred to Coinbase Under Court Order

      TLDR

      • Federal authorities transferred 264.863 BTC, valued at approximately $23 million, to Coinbase on October 6, 2026.
      • The transfer relates to the 2016 Bitfinex breach and represents part of a court-mandated restitution program, not a liquidation.
      • A federal court decision in 2025 mandated that confiscated Bitcoin be returned to Bitfinex in cryptocurrency form rather than fiat currency.
      • The exchange intends to allocate the recovered coins toward redeeming Recovery Right Tokens and executing buybacks of its LEO token.
      • Despite this and other recent transactions, the federal government maintains substantial Bitcoin holdings.

Federal authorities completed a significant Bitcoin transfer to Coinbase this week, connected to one of the cryptocurrency industry’s most notorious security breaches. Blockchain records show that on October 6, 2026, addresses associated with the US Marshals Service transferred approximately 264.863 BTC, valued at around $22.87 million at the time, to the exchange.

The cryptocurrency originates from the 2016 Bitfinex security incident, during which cybercriminals made off with approximately 119,754 BTC from the platform. The breach stands as one of the most significant thefts in cryptocurrency history.

This transaction wasn’t the inaugural movement of these specific holdings. In April 2026, authorities transferred a smaller amount of approximately 8.2 BTC, then worth roughly $606,000, to a Coinbase Prime deposit wallet.

Coinbase Prime serves as the platform’s institutional division. The service provides custody solutions and trading infrastructure for institutional participants, including federal entities.

Government representatives have characterized these movements as custodial operations rather than liquidations. This classification holds significance for market participants monitoring potential government Bitcoin entering circulation.

The underlying rationale for these transfers stems from a federal court decision issued in 2025. That judicial ruling mandated that authorities return the confiscated Bitcoin directly to Bitfinex in its original form, rather than liquidating it for fiat currency beforehand.

What Happens to the Returned Bitcoin

Law enforcement recovered approximately 94,636 BTC connected to the breach in 2022. The recovery occurred following the apprehension of Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, who orchestrated the laundering of the stolen cryptocurrency.

Lichtenstein received a five-year prison sentence. Morgan was sentenced to 18 months of incarceration.

The exchange has outlined a dual-purpose strategy for utilizing the recovered cryptocurrency. Initially, Bitfinex intends to deploy the Bitcoin to settle Recovery Right Tokens, which were distributed to users who suffered losses during the original security breach.

Subsequently, the platform has committed to allocating a minimum of 80% of any surplus funds toward repurchasing and permanently removing its UNUS SED LEO token from circulation.

Other Wallet Movements by US Marshals

The Bitfinex-related transaction occurred alongside broader federal wallet activity. During the same 24-hour period, government-controlled addresses moved a combined total of 833.6 BTC valued at approximately $71 million, representing the first activity from these wallets since August 26.

Blockchain analyst Sani, who operates timechainindex.com, first identified the activity. He documented a preliminary test transaction of 0.00115539 BTC sent to Coinbase Prime ahead of the substantial transfer.

Federal wallets also transferred $31.63 million in BNB connected to forfeited FTX assets. This movement included an initial test transaction of 0.127 BNB, followed by a primary transfer of 40,285.07 BNB.

An additional 568 BTC transfer originated from holdings seized in the Potapenko-Turogin prosecution. That criminal case centered on a fraudulent cloud mining scheme called Hashflare, where defendants sold mining contracts linked to nonexistent data center infrastructure.

Despite these multiple transactions, federal Bitcoin reserves remain substantial. Current data indicates the US government continues to hold approximately 323,693.83 BTC, with an estimated value of roughly $27.72 billion.

The approximately 264.863 BTC designated for Bitfinex restitution represents a relatively modest portion of the government’s overall cryptocurrency holdings.
