European Stock Markets Decline Amid Rising Bond Yields

European stock markets opened the new month with declines across major indices, as investors reacted to rising bond yields. The Eurostoxx index fell by 0.5%, while Germany's DAX decreased by 0.6%, France's CAC 40 dropped by 0.7%, and the UK's FTSE 100 experienced a significant decline of 1.2%. Spain's IBEX and Italy's FTSE MIB also saw losses of 1.0% and 0.7%, respectively, with the UK and Spain facing the steepest declines.

The bond market remains a key concern, with 10-year U.S. Treasury yields reaching 5.31%, the highest level since 2007, and currently hovering around 5.30%. This increase in borrowing costs has created a challenging environment for equities, particularly following the worst quarter for Treasuries since 1994. The combination of rising bond yields and fluctuating oil prices is contributing to a cautious sentiment among investors.

Oil prices have also been under pressure, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude briefly falling below $89 before recovering to approximately $90.87. The persistent inflation risk associated with elevated energy prices continues to weigh on market sentiment. Despite these challenges, there was a notable divergence in the technology sector, buoyed by strong earnings from Micron Technology, which positively impacted AI-related stocks in Japan and South Korea. U.S. futures indicated a more optimistic tone, with S&P 500 futures up by 0.5% and Nasdaq futures rising by 1.1% as European trading commenced. However, the overall risk tone remains cautious as investors await signs of stabilization in the bond market.
