Bitcoin (BTC) Plunges to $76K Amid U.S.-Iran Military Escalation
TLDR
- Bitcoin plummeted to $76,762 following U.S. military operations targeting Iranian military sites
- Ethereum slid under $2,400, triggering $115 million in liquidations of long positions within 60 minutes
- Brent crude oil approached $93 per barrel on fears of Strait of Hormuz disruptions
- S&P 500 declined to levels not seen since early August as Treasury yields climbed higher
- Strategy acquired 4,603 BTC worth $368.7 million, marking its first accumulation in two months
The cryptocurrency market experienced significant turbulence on Tuesday after U.S. military operations commenced against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facilities across Iran. Bitcoin’s value declined sharply to $76,762, breaking through critical support levels at $78,000 and $77,000 in rapid succession.

Military operations were officially confirmed by U.S. Central Command, which announced that strikes commenced at noon Eastern Time on Tuesday. The targets included IRGC installations believed to be connected with mine deployment operations in proximity to the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Media outlets controlled by the Iranian government confirmed detonations occurring at multiple locations, including Qeshm Island, the port city of Bandar Abbas, and Chabahar. Through the Fars news agency, the IRGC issued a statement declaring that the United States “will regret its new attacks.”
President Trump characterized the military operations as “large and powerful,” while issuing a stark warning that any Iranian counterattack would be met with a “much harder and higher level” of response.
Iran responded by launching ballistic missiles at Camp Titin, a U.S. Marine Corps installation located in Jordan. According to Jordanian government sources, eight incoming missiles were successfully intercepted and neutralized.
Cryptocurrency Markets Under Stress
Amidst the market turbulence, cryptocurrency analyst Nebraskangooner shared his perspective on X, noting that Bitcoin’s August candle closure makes establishing a bottom “more likely than not.” However, he identified $73,500 as the critical support threshold. This level represents the invalidation point for the bullish scenario, and if it holds firm, he anticipates potential rallies toward $87,000 and $97,000.
Ethereum experienced a parallel decline, falling beneath the $2,400 price level during the same timeframe. Data from Coinglass revealed that approximately $115 million worth of leveraged long positions were forcibly liquidated in a single 60-minute window.
Traditional financial markets also suffered. The S&P 500 index retreated to its weakest position since the beginning of August, while U.S. Treasury bond yields advanced as investors sold bonds amid growing concerns about inflation and mounting government debt.
Market participants have increased their expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate increase in September, particularly following Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s hawkish remarks delivered at the Jackson Hole economic symposium last Friday.
Energy Markets Surge on Supply Disruption Concerns
Brent crude oil prices climbed toward the $93 per barrel mark as market participants monitored maritime transit conditions through the strategically important strait. Meanwhile, U.S. oil benchmarks advanced toward $90 per barrel.
Additional concerns emerged following reports that two oil tankers sustained damage while exiting the Strait of Hormuz, intensifying worries about supply chain stability. Iranian authorities issued warnings suggesting that Persian Gulf oil shipments could face significant interruptions if international pressure persists.
The escalation follows closely after Bitcoin recorded its strongest monthly gain since November 2024, surging approximately 25% throughout August.
Strategy revealed it acquired 4,603 Bitcoin valued at roughly $368.7 million during the previous week — representing the company’s first acquisition since the end of June. The transaction was financed through $602.8 million in equity sales, elevating Strategy’s aggregate Bitcoin holdings to 845,050 BTC.
