Canada's September Consumer Price Index Shows 3.1% Year-Over-Year Increase

Canada's Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September recorded a year-over-year increase of 3.1%, slightly below the expected 3.2%. This figure marks a rise from the previous month's CPI of 3.0%. The monthly change was an increase of 0.1%, which also fell short of the anticipated 0.2%.

Core inflation measures from the Bank of Canada (BOC) showed a year-over-year increase of 2.2%, down from 2.4% in the prior month. The monthly core inflation remained unchanged at 0.0%, compared to a prior increase of 0.1%. Other core measures, including the CPI median and CPI trim, reported figures of 1.9% and 1.8% respectively, both slightly below market expectations.

The BOC targets a total CPI inflation rate of 2%, which is the midpoint of its control range of 1% to 3%. The latest CPI report is expected to alleviate some pressure on the BOC regarding potential interest rate hikes. However, the Canadian dollar experienced a decline, with the USD/CAD exchange rate rising from 1.4075 to 1.4106 following the release of the data.
