The investment thesis centers on robust demand fundamentals. The heavy equipment manufacturer finished Q2 with an unprecedented $72 billion in outstanding orders, representing 92% growth versus the prior year period. This isn’t marginal improvement.

CEO Joe Creed highlighted “broadening momentum” spanning the company’s three core divisions. Market participants remain divided on whether this trajectory supports the current valuation.

AI Infrastructure Fuels Power Equipment Surge

Data center construction extends far beyond semiconductor installations. These facilities require extensive site preparation, water infrastructure, electrical grid connectivity, and frequently dedicated power generation systems since traditional utility connections often lag behind demand.

Caterpillar supplies both the earthmoving machinery and the power generation equipment these projects demand. The Power & Energy division posted 17% revenue growth to $8.2 billion in Q2, with power generation specifically jumping 29%.

Management forecasts power generation revenue will triple between 2024 and 2030. Certain clients are already securing delivery slots extending through decade’s end.

A recent contract illustrates the magnitude. American Intelligence & Power secured 2 gigawatts worth of Caterpillar generators for a West Virginia hyperscale facility, with deliveries scheduled through August 2027.

This represents sustained multi-year commitments rather than isolated quarterly transactions. Additional tailwinds from electrification initiatives, manufacturing reshoring, and mining expansion further amplify equipment demand.

Autonomous Technology and Recurring Revenue Growth

The company is simultaneously advancing autonomous equipment capabilities. A remotely operated bulldozer recently entered service at an Arizona waste facility, enabling operators to control machinery from climate-controlled stations away from harsh working conditions.

WM is evaluating an autonomous compactor following successful remote dozer trials. Meanwhile, at Luck Stone’s Bull Run operation, autonomous haul trucks have transported over 3.5 million tons since November 2024, with the system now expanding to two additional Virginia locations.

Caterpillar hasn’t quantified autonomy-related revenue streams yet. This leaves market participants awaiting concrete evidence that technological advancement drives measurable service income.

Services already contribute substantially to overall results. The division generated $24 billion last year, supported by a network exceeding 1.6 million connected machines.

From a valuation perspective, 2026 earnings estimates of $27.19 per share place CAT at approximately 30x forward earnings. This represents a significant premium to the mid-to-high-teens multiples the stock commanded before AI infrastructure narratives gained prominence.

Leadership has also identified roughly $2.2 billion in tariff-related costs for 2026. This represents genuine margin pressure even as top-line demand accelerates.

Caterpillar reinforced its financial strength with an 8% dividend increase in June, raising the quarterly distribution to $1.63. This extends a 32-year consecutive annual increase record, although the current yield sits at just 0.8%.

The company simultaneously executed $1.5 billion in share repurchases during Q2. Analyst consensus currently assigns CAT a Moderate Buy rating, with eight Buy recommendations balanced against eight Hold ratings.

The mean price target stands at $1,009.71, implying approximately 23% appreciation from present levels. At $811.58, shares trade 76% above the $461.18 GF Value benchmark, creating a substantial valuation gap relative to developments awaiting concrete financial quantification.
