Citi Raises Bitcoin and Ether Price Targets Amid Crypto Recovery

Citigroup has increased its 12-month price targets for Bitcoin and Ether, reflecting a more optimistic outlook for the cryptocurrency market. The bank raised its Bitcoin target to $113,000 from $82,000 and its Ether forecast to $3,028 from $2,240, citing stronger market activity and a supportive macroeconomic environment. The forecast anticipates approximately $5 billion in inflows into cryptocurrency over the next year, driven by financial advisers and brokerages gradually increasing their allocations to Bitcoin.

The upgrade comes despite a setback in regulatory developments, as the U.S. Senate did not advance the Clarity Act, which aimed to establish a framework for digital asset markets. However, announcements from the Securities and Exchange Commission have helped to alleviate some negative sentiment in the market. Over the past three months, Bitcoin has gained nearly 40%, while Ether has surged about 68%, reducing their year-to-date losses to approximately 4% and 9%, respectively.

Citi's analysis indicates a significant disparity in potential upside between the two cryptocurrencies, with Bitcoin expected to see about 31% upside compared to 11% for Ether. This shift in positioning may reflect the market's response to recent performance trends, as Bitcoin's recovery has been supported by a weaker U.S. dollar following the Treasury's decision to buy back longer-dated bonds. The overall outlook for cryptocurrencies remains contingent on broader macroeconomic factors, including potential increases in U.S. Treasury yields, which could impact investor sentiment.
