S&P 500 Shows Strong Performance Amid Midterm Elections, Bank of America Reports

The S&P 500 index has gained 13% in 2026, defying the typical midterm election slump that averages around 3% for U.S. stocks during such years, according to analysis from Bank of America. This performance positions 2026 to potentially be the best midterm year for U.S. equities since 2006. The bank's report highlights that historical trends indicate a favorable outlook for stocks following midterm elections, with the S&P 500 rising in every six- and twelve-month period post-election since World War II, averaging gains of approximately 13% and 14%, respectively.

Bank of America also notes that the fourth quarter has historically been the strongest period for stock performance, with average gains of about 5.6% since 1930. The analysts suggest that the current market dynamics, including strong seasonality and potential clarity on fiscal policy after the upcoming elections, could further bolster investor confidence. October has typically been a positive month for equities, reinforcing the notion that the latter part of the year often yields better returns for investors.

Despite the optimistic outlook, the report cautions that external factors such as rising Treasury yields, which are at multi-decade highs, and fragile oil supply could pose risks to the market. The analysts emphasize that while historical patterns provide useful insights, long-term stock performance is more closely tied to corporate earnings, valuations, and economic conditions than to electoral outcomes. As the midterm elections approach, investors are advised to remain focused on these fundamental factors.
