Nvidia Approaches $6 Trillion Market Value Amid Strong AI Demand

Nvidia has reached record highs in its stock price, trading between $238 and $240, and bringing its market value to approximately $5.7 trillion. This surge follows a nearly 3% increase that marked its first record close since May. The company has seen a 28% rise in its stock this year, recovering from a significant sell-off in July that resulted in a loss of around $1 trillion in market value.

The board of Nvidia has approved an additional $150 billion in share buybacks, raising the total remaining authorization to about $235 billion through fiscal 2028. This buyback program is noted as one of the largest in corporate history. Morgan Stanley has reinstated Nvidia as its top semiconductor pick, citing strong demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and a shift in constraints from chip supply to power and land for data centers, which could benefit Nvidia as customers seek greater computing power.

Despite these achievements, Nvidia's performance has lagged behind the broader semiconductor sector, which has seen a 96% increase in a widely tracked exchange-traded fund this year. Analysts are divided on Nvidia's future, with some believing that its earnings growth can sustain the stock's upward trajectory, while others caution that the AI spending cycle may eventually lead to overcapacity risks for chip suppliers.
