Elon Musk's Comments Impact Intel and TSMC Stock Prices Amid Terafab Discussions

Elon Musk's recent remarks regarding Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) have caused notable fluctuations in the stock prices of major semiconductor companies. Musk confirmed that TSMC is in discussions about potentially joining Terafab, a significant chipmaking venture in Texas backed by Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. Following his comments, Intel's shares fell by more than 4% before the market opened, while TSMC's stock saw a slight increase of approximately 1% in the U.S. and around 3% in Taiwan.

Terafab, announced in March, is a $25 billion project in Austin, Texas, aiming to produce chips for various applications, including robotics and space technology. Intel is currently the only named manufacturing partner for Terafab, which is crucial for its strategy to establish itself as a foundry for external customers. The involvement of TSMC could change the dynamics of this partnership, as it may shift Intel's role from being the sole manufacturer to one of several competitors for production capacity.

The potential for TSMC to operate a facility at Terafab raises questions about Intel's future in the foundry business. Analysts have noted that Intel's foundry division generated only $290 million in revenue from external customers in the second quarter, highlighting the challenges it faces in attracting significant business. The market's sensitivity to Musk's comments reflects the high expectations investors have for Intel's future profitability, particularly in light of its recent struggles against competitors like AMD in the PC processor market.
