Aramco CEO Warns of Long Road to Rebuild Global Oil Inventories

Amin Nasser, the CEO of Saudi Aramco, has stated that it may take up to two years to rebuild the world's depleted oil inventories, even after the Strait of Hormuz fully reopens. Speaking at the Energy Intelligence Forum in London, Nasser described global stockpiles as 'scarily thin,' noting that less than 10% of the world's oil inventories are currently available for use. He highlighted that approximately 3 billion barrels of supply have been lost since the onset of the Iran war, with over 1 billion barrels drawn from existing stockpiles to meet demand.

Nasser emphasized that to replenish these inventories while satisfying ongoing demand, an additional 2 million barrels per day would be required over the next 18 months. Despite oil production nearing prewar levels and improvements in shipping through Hormuz, damage to refining infrastructure in the Middle East continues to drive up fuel prices faster than crude oil prices. He pointed out that refined product prices have surged due to limited refining capacity and a recent suspension of fuel exports by Chinese refiners to safeguard domestic supplies.

Aramco has the capacity to produce 12 million barrels per day and is actively working on developing additional export routes and storage solutions to mitigate reliance on any single corridor. Nasser called for enhanced cooperation between oil producers and consumers regarding emergency planning, asserting that oil remains a critical component of global energy security. His remarks indicate that even with a complete reopening of Hormuz, the market may face prolonged tightness due to the current state of inventories.
