Trump Signs Order to Waive Tax on Red-Dyed Diesel Amid Rising Fuel Costs

US President Donald Trump has signed an order that waives the off-road requirement for tax-exempt red-dyed diesel, allowing broader access to this fuel for all buyers. This move aims to alleviate the financial burden of soaring diesel prices, which have recently reached an average of approximately $6.30 per gallon, significantly higher than the $3.80 seen earlier this year.

Red-dyed diesel, chemically identical to standard diesel, is typically used for off-road purposes such as farming and construction. The federal highway tax on this fuel is about 24 cents per gallon, which constitutes roughly 4% of the current pump price. However, analysts suggest that the tax break will have a limited impact on overall diesel costs, as it does not alter wholesale prices and the underlying supply remains constrained.

US diesel inventories are at historically low levels, and global stocks are exceptionally tight, exacerbated by supply disruptions from the Middle East. The Group of Seven (G7) nations recently agreed to release up to 100 million barrels of emergency oil and diesel stocks to address these shortages. Further details regarding the implementation and duration of the tax waiver are expected to be announced soon.
