Conagra (CAG) Stock Fluctuates Following Strong Q1 Earnings Report
Key Takeaways
- Conagra Brands surpassed analyst projections for first-quarter fiscal earnings and revenue.
- The company reported adjusted profit of 41 cents per share, significantly exceeding the 28-cent consensus estimate.
- Revenue declined 1% year-over-year to $2.6 billion, aligning with analyst predictions.
- Management maintained its full-year financial guidance for both sales and earnings.
- Stock exhibited volatile trading patterns in premarket activity following the earnings announcement.
Shares of Conagra Brands experienced volatility during Wednesday’s premarket session after the packaged food company unveiled fiscal first-quarter results that significantly exceeded profit expectations on Wall Street. The maker of popular brands including Slim Jim snacks and Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn delivered adjusted profit of 41 cents per share.
This performance substantially outpaced the analyst consensus of 28 cents. Revenue totaled $2.6 billion, in line with expectations even as it represented a 1% year-over-year decline.
On a reported basis, net income increased to $174.3 million, equivalent to 36 cents per share. This marks an improvement from $164.5 million, or 34 cents per share, recorded in the prior-year period.
John Brase, who assumed the CEO role in June, characterized the quarter as a strong beginning to fiscal 2027. He highlighted improvements in margin performance and expense management as critical success factors.
Business Unit Results Show Varied Performance
The Refrigerated & Frozen division experienced a 2% decline in net sales. Both reduced unit volumes and weakening price levels contributed to the segment’s underperformance.
The Grocery and snacks category performed even more poorly, recording a 3% sales decrease. Volume declines in this division overshadowed the positive impact of price increases implemented by management.
Favorable pricing dynamics and an improved product mix contributed 1% to organic net sales on a consolidated basis. This partially offset the negative impact of diminished volumes throughout the organization.
Adjusted gross profit decreased 4% compared to the previous year. The company received a modest $4 million benefit from tariff reimbursements that provided some relief.
Full-Year Projections Remain Unchanged
Conagra confirmed its previously issued full-year financial projections. Management continues to anticipate organic net sales will decline in the range of 1% to 3%.
The adjusted earnings per share forecast remains unchanged at $1.40 to $1.50. This guidance encompasses the $1.44 consensus estimate from Wall Street analysts.
Brase emphasized the company’s focus on executing strategic priorities outlined earlier in the year. These initiatives encompass margin restoration, operational simplification, and capital allocation optimization.
The quarterly results follow a challenging period for Conagra. In July, the company slashed its annual dividend payment by 50%.
During that announcement, executives revealed they were evaluating non-core portfolio assets. Brase suggested certain brands might be divested if they don’t align with the company’s long-term strategic direction.
Market reactions to the earnings release were mixed. Reuters noted Conagra shares declined 3% in premarket trading, while The Wall Street Journal reported a 2.6% gain to $14.49 in early trading, illustrating conflicting initial investor sentiment.
With the fiscal year just underway, this initial quarter establishes important momentum. Management maintains that its transformation initiatives are beginning to materialize in financial performance, despite ongoing challenges with sales volumes across key categories.
