DP World to expand Angola port after concession extension

Dubai’s DP World has secured a 10-year extension until 2051 for its concession to operate a multipurpose terminal in Angola and committed new investments to expand the port of Luanda, the African country’s capital.

The global ports operator has invested more than $260 million to upgrade and modernise the terminal since operations there began in 2021.

Over the past five years cargo volume handled at the terminal has nearly doubled to more than 350,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), supported by an additional 28,000 square metres of yard area, the company said in a statement.

DP World will invest a further $90 million over the next two years to expand and enhance the terminal’s infrastructure, equipment and operational capabilities.

The expansion will extend the quay by 222 metres, the operating area by 100,000 square metres and the terminal’s design capacity to 1.2 million TEUs.

Mohammed Akoojee, CEO for Africa at DP World, said the ability to handle larger vessels would support new shipping services and strengthen the terminal’s potential as a gateway for West and Central Africa.

      Further reading:

In late September DP World signed a preliminary agreement to develop a special economic zone and a deep seaport in southwestern Nigeria.

It also signed a deal to co-develop a 222-hectare special economic zone in Kenya and awarded a contract in August to redevelop Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam Port.

The state-backed port operator invested 50 percent of its annual $3 billion capital deployment across its global portfolio in the first half of 2026, supporting new capacity and trade in the UAE, the UK, India, Saudi Arabia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
