Shares of Lamb Weston advanced roughly 3% during Tuesday’s premarket session after the frozen-potato producer delivered fiscal first-quarter performance that exceeded Wall Street’s targets. The stock traded around $45.85, marking a gain from the previous session’s close.
Lamb Weston Holdings, Inc., LW
The supplier of french fries to major restaurant chains including McDonald’s and Chick-fil-A announced adjusted earnings of 75 cents per share. This figure significantly exceeded the Street’s 59-cent consensus forecast.
Quarterly sales advanced 1% to reach $1.67 billion. Wall Street had anticipated $1.65 billion in revenue.
Beyond delivering a strong quarter, Lamb Weston also upgraded its financial outlook for the remainder of fiscal year 2027.
Factors Behind the Enhanced Forecast
Executives highlighted powerful tailwinds in the North American market. Volume expansion came from both increased orders from current partners and the addition of fresh customer relationships.
Operational efficiency initiatives contributed meaningfully as well. The organization has been consolidating certain production sites and reducing its global headcount by approximately 4%.
Chief Executive Mike Smith noted the quarter demonstrated “continued momentum in North America” combined with disciplined expense management. These dual dynamics enhanced segment profitability.
The organization now anticipates full-year net sales will expand in the low single digits. This represents an improvement from the prior expectation of flat to 1% growth.
The adjusted earnings outlook also received an upward revision. Management now targets $3.05 to $3.35 per share for the fiscal year, compared to the earlier band of $2.95 to $3.25.
Underneath the Surface: A Nuanced Performance
While headline figures impressed, not all metrics pointed upward. Net income tumbled 55% year-over-year, falling to $29.1 million from $64.3 million in the comparable period.
Adjusted EBITDA declined nearly 6% to $285.6 million, down from the prior year’s $302.2 million.
The pressure didn’t originate domestically. International operations drove the softness.
The company’s International division reported an 8% sales decline to $529 million. Segment adjusted EBITDA plunged 54% to merely $27 million, primarily reflecting challenging European market dynamics.
Domestic operations painted a contrasting picture. North American segment revenue climbed 5% to $1.14 billion, propelled by 7% volume expansion.
North America segment adjusted EBITDA surged 11% to $287 million. The improvement stemmed from stronger sales volumes, efficiency gains, and $5 million in recovered tariff payments.
Adjusted net income remained stable at $103 million versus the year-ago quarter. Adjusted diluted EPS edged marginally higher, moving from 74 cents to 75 cents.
Management also raised its full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance. The company now forecasts $1.125 billion to $1.215 billion, up from the previous range of $1.10 billion to $1.20 billion.
This revised range exceeds analyst consensus, which had centered around $3.01 for EPS. Lamb Weston’s updated midpoint of $3.20 comfortably surpasses that benchmark.
Lamb Weston shares have climbed nearly 8% year-to-date, based on Dow Jones Market Data. Tuesday’s premarket advance extends that positive trajectory.
The producer’s fiscal first quarter concluded with mixed results. Powerful North American execution balanced European headwinds, and the market appears to be rewarding the upgraded guidance despite the net income contraction.
