Ethereum Researchers Warn of AI Threats to Wallet Security

Two senior researchers from the Ethereum Foundation have raised concerns about the potential risks posed by advancements in artificial intelligence to the cryptography that secures cryptocurrency wallets. Justin Drake and Vitalik Buterin have emphasized the need for crypto holders to consider using wallet addresses that have never been used for transactions, as this could help protect against future threats. Drake has suggested that the signature schemes securing Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets could be compromised sooner than anticipated, possibly within months, rather than years, due to AI-driven mathematical breakthroughs.

Drake's warning follows a series of recent AI-generated mathematical results that challenge long-standing assumptions in the field. He highlighted a significant disproof of an 80-year-old conjecture and noted the emergence of what he termed 'mathematical superintelligence.' While he advocates for immediate action, urging large holders to migrate assets to new addresses, Buterin has taken a more cautious stance, advising holders to move funds only if it is convenient and safe to do so, citing the risks associated with botched migrations.

Both researchers agree on the importance of keeping funds in unused addresses to maintain the privacy of public keys, which can be exploited if exposed. They also discussed the potential vulnerabilities of quantum-resistant cryptography, which the industry is currently developing. Despite their differing views on the urgency of action, both researchers advocate for a shift towards hash-based cryptography as a long-term solution to enhance security against evolving threats.
