European Central Bank Expected to Raise Deposit Rate Amid Inflation Concerns

The European Central Bank (ECB) is anticipated to increase its deposit rate by 25 basis points to 2.50% during its upcoming meeting. This adjustment has already been fully factored into market expectations. While the rate hike itself is not expected to surprise investors, attention will shift to President Christine Lagarde's press conference following the decision, which will provide insights into the ECB's future policy direction.

This meeting occurs against a backdrop of rising inflation in the Eurozone, which reached 3.3% year-on-year in August. Contributing factors include sharply increasing energy prices, exacerbated by ongoing geopolitical tensions and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Recently, European gas prices have surged to their highest levels since 2022, and the conflict involving Iran shows no signs of resolution. Despite these pressures, core and services inflation have shown signs of moderation, and economic activity has proven more resilient than previously anticipated.

The anticipated rate hike would position the deposit rate at the upper end of the ECB's estimated neutral range, making this meeting crucial for assessing whether the ECB believes this level is adequate to address current economic shocks. Investment banks largely agree that September may mark the conclusion of the tightening cycle, with few expecting the ECB to signal further hikes. However, many analysts caution that the potential for additional tightening remains if energy prices continue to rise or if inflationary pressures expand.
