GameStop (GME) shares surged 3.2% during after-hours trading on Monday following CEO Ryan Cohen’s disclosure of a substantial $26.4 million stock acquisition.
Cohen executed the purchase of 1,150,680 shares on September 21, paying a weighted average of $22.94 per share. Transaction prices spanned from $22.76 to $23.02 across several trades. This brings his direct ownership to 40,498,522 shares, worth roughly $174.98 million at current valuations.
The transaction has reignited interest in a stock that’s been demonstrating increasing signs of insider conviction.
Cohen wasn’t acting alone. Board member Alain Attal completed two separate acquisitions in recent weeks. His first transaction occurred on September 10, purchasing 5,000 shares at $20.00 each for $100,000. He subsequently added 17,500 shares on September 21 at $22.97 per share, investing an additional $401,975. Attal’s total position now stands at 618,964 shares, representing a 2.91% expansion.
During Monday’s regular session, GME closed at $22.82, gaining $0.18. Trading volume reached 9.5 million shares, exceeding the typical daily average of 7.67 million.
Quarterly Performance Analysis
GameStop unveiled its quarterly financial results on September 8. Earnings per share reached $0.27, aligning precisely with analyst projections. Revenue totaled $790.2 million, exceeding the consensus forecast of $756.85 million.
Despite beating revenue expectations, the figure represented an 18.7% decline from the comparable period last year. The previous year’s quarter delivered EPS of $0.31. The company’s return on equity currently registers at 13.57%, complemented by a net margin of 25.16%.
GME currently trades with a price-to-earnings multiple of 15.01, commands a market capitalization of $11.51 billion, and exhibits a beta of 1.72. The 50-day moving average rests at $20.05, while the 200-day average sits at $21.89. Over the past year, shares have fluctuated between $17.79 and $28.10.
Professional and Institutional Perspectives
Analyst sentiment remains measured. Weiss Ratings and Wall Street Zen both assign “Hold” ratings to GME. Notably, Wall Street Zen downgraded its recommendation from “Buy” to “Hold” on September 7.
From an institutional standpoint, Rockefeller Capital Management expanded its GME holdings by 805.6% during the fourth quarter, while multiple other investment firms established fresh positions earlier this year. Overall institutional ownership accounts for 29.21% of outstanding shares.
Jim Cramer stated on September 17 that GameStop represents a buying opportunity, citing the company’s profitability, substantial cash position, and ongoing transformation efforts.
Additionally, unconfirmed rumors have circulated regarding potential renewed activity from Keith Gill, recognized as “Roaring Kitty.” No substantiated business development has been connected to these rumors.
The stock’s 50-day moving average of $20.05 remains considerably beneath the current trading price, indicating that recent purchasing activity has elevated GME above its near-term technical baseline. The company maintains a current ratio of 8.72 alongside a debt-to-equity ratio of 0.68.
